I originally trained as a classical singer, despite primarily listening to pop/dance/urban music. A quick google search will show you many videos of my classical and operatic solo performances at places like Norwich Cathedral.
My passion lies in songwriting and in performing and recording the songs that I write. For the past 6 years I have been developing this art; from writing poetry which turned into lyrics which then evolved into songs. You will hear the poetic, storytelling element to my songs most clearly in my single called Trance (links below).
My influences are mostly pop, including all current pop princesses like Zara Larsson and Camila Cabello, back to singers like Amy Winehouse, Dido and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. You may also hear some of my favourite 90’s RnB in my writing (Destiny’s Child were definitely the best!).
I am currently also a music teacher at Great Yarmouth Charter Academy and I produced my first song video originally to inspire the pupils at my school to write music and get off their gaming consoles! I quickly realised that I absolutely love doing this – being in the recording studio, coming up with arrangements and, more recently performing my original songs at Norwich venues such as Platform 12.
The educational and inspirational element to my songwriting journey is still really important to me – it’s great for children to see people they know and from their town doing well, so for pupils to see their teacher working to achieve her dreams has made them think: ‘I could do that too!’
I have recently been working and gigging with Norfolk-based author, Louis de Bernieres, most famous for ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’. Louis plays acoustic guitar on my single, Trance, and will also be on most of my EP tracks. I enjoy collaborating and it gives fresh inspiration for my writing. Louis said of me “Selina is a delight to work with. She has contributed an enormous amount to my recordings with her voice and violin and I am glad to have contributed a little to hers too.”
My EP is set to launch next month. I am presently working with Paul Cook (photographer/film producer) and with Scott ‘Scooby’ Atkins from the Garage in Norwich to choreograph and film a video for my forthcoming single and EP track, called Superficial Boy, which is based on the ITV series Love Island! It is an exciting project and will be great to work with such talented teenage dancers from Passion Productions at the Garage.
Check out the video of Trance, which was mostly filmed underwater in a swimming pool. Producer Donovan Jones has made me appear to be in Ketteringham Hall’s lake – Ingenious!
